Cape Ann in November: A Quiet-Season Guide to Gloucester and Rockport
Most people who come to Cape Ann come in July. They sit in traffic on Route 128, circle the lot at Good Harbor Beach, and wait an hour for a table at the lobster shack. Then the summer people leave, and Gloucester quietly turns into the version of itself that the people who live here like best.
November is that version at its most livable. The harbor is still working, the galleries and music halls are in full season, the rocks at Halibut Point have the whole Atlantic to themselves, and the roads and restaurants are a lot easier than they were in August. Here is what is on during November on Cape Ann, and how to put a weekend around it.
Why November is the best-kept month on Cape Ann
- You get the coast back. The beaches, the back shore, and the walking trails are open and close to empty. A November walk on Good Harbor at low tide is one of the best free things on the North Shore.
- The culture calendar is full. Fall is when Cape Ann’s concert halls, galleries, and museums run their programs, and November has more on than most people expect.
- Gloucester is still Gloucester. This is America’s oldest seaport, and the fishing fleet works year-round. In November it is still a working harbor, just without the crowds watching it.
- It is easier to book. Rooms and dinner reservations are much easier to come by than in summer, so a weekend can come together on short notice.

Renaissance Faire at Hammond Castle: November 7–8
Hammond Castle Museum, the 1920s stone castle on the cliffs above Gloucester Harbor, holds its Renaissance Faire on Saturday and Sunday, November 7–8, rain or shine. Tickets must be reserved in advance and include access to the castle’s interior. There is no parking at the castle for the Faire: park for free at Stage Fort Park and take the free shuttle.
From the Deep: a downtown Gloucester arts party, November 7
The same Saturday, the Harbortown Cultural District’s fall edition of From the Deep fills downtown Gloucester with art, music, and gallery events from 11 am to 5 pm. Pair it with the Faire for a full first-weekend-of-November day. Details are on Discover Gloucester.
Concerts at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport
Rockport Music’s Shalin Liu Performance Center is one of the best small concert halls in New England, and its stage looks straight out over the harbor through a wall of glass. November highlights include guitarist Jesse Cook on Sunday, November 8, and jazz pianist Christian Sands on Sunday, November 29, both at 5 pm. A Sunday-evening concert is the right way to end a Cape Ann weekend. Popular shows sell out, so book tickets before you book the drive.
Rockport Art Association & Museum
The Rockport Art Association & Museum runs exhibitions straight through the fall. The juried Fall Exhibition and Riding the Waves: Art of the Schooner Adventure are up through November 8, and Fair Winds and Following Seas runs through December 20. Afterward, walk out onto Bearskin Neck, which is quiet enough in November to actually see.
Thanksgiving weekend on Cape Ann
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year. The weekend after is when Cape Ann starts to light up for the holidays: Winter Lights on Cape Ann has traditionally begun on Small Business Saturday (November 28 this year), with storefronts across Gloucester and Rockport decorated through New Year’s. Our guide to a winter weekend on Cape Ann covers December, including Christmas in Rockport.
A November weekend in Gloucester
- Saturday morning — Coffee downtown, then out to the Hammond Castle Faire, or to the galleries for From the Deep on November 7.
- Saturday afternoon — A walk on Good Harbor Beach or the trails at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport while the light lasts. It gets dark early in November, so plan the outdoors for midday.
- Saturday evening — Dinner in Gloucester. Our Gloucester seafood guide has the places worth the trip.
- Sunday — A slow breakfast, Bearskin Neck and the Rockport Art Association, then a 5 pm concert at the Shalin Liu before the drive home.

Practical notes for visiting in November
- Check hours before you go. Some seasonal restaurants and shops shorten their hours or close for the winter after October. Call ahead, especially early in the week.
- Book the headline events early. Hammond Castle Faire tickets and Shalin Liu concerts both need to be reserved in advance.
- Pack for the coast. November on Cape Ann is cool, and the wind off the water is the real temperature. Bring layers and shoes you can walk the rocks in.
- Plan around the light. With sunset well before 5 pm, put the beaches and trails in the middle of the day and save the town for the evening.
